Last week may son and I took the Z to Deals Gap. We had a great time driving the Dragon and the Cherohala. On our way home we encountered an early, all stock Mazda Miata on NC highway 28. While I never though much this car, my experience of running behind it definitely changed my opinion of it. The short wheel base gave it a definite advantage over the Z in tight downhill curves. While we had no problem staying behind it, the Z was at its limit of holding the road. Granted the car's Bridgestone potenzas are worn but by no means done for. Up hills, the Z's power could easily ride the Miata's bumper. Had this Miata been modded (wider tires and engine power enhancements) or been one of the newer supercharged models I doubt we would have been much competition. I was impressed how fast and smooth it handled twisty, up and down hwy 28.
